Even as a child, I felt that nature was imbued with spirit. It wasn’t until much later that I learned about Shintō. At the core of Japan’s oldest indigenous religion is the worship of the so-called kami—divine spirits or nature deities that dwell in trees, rivers, stones, or animals. To me it makes perfect sense that the focus is on harmony between humans and nature.
